Snakes and Ladders: How to Ensure Your Trees Don't Allow Snakes into Your Home
Did you know that of the 140 species of snake in Australia, 100 are poisonous? And if you live in a warm zone like Sydney or Queensland, a snake or two has probably slithered through your yard at some point in the past. Although snakes will avoid humans if possible, they may wander into your home if given the opportunity to do so.
Trees can provide snakes with a ladder by which they may reach an open window or vent. Fortunately, you can prevent this from happening by ensuring that you maintain your yard and its trees in the following ways.
Trim Low-Hanging Branches
Snakes can use low-hanging branches to reach the upper portion of a tree. Once there, they may seek refuge under the tree's canopy on hot days. They may also wait for prey, such as birds and rats. However, if your tree is within reach of your home, they may seek shelter from the sun in the shadow of your roof. They may also hang around your windowsills, waiting to snack on geckos.
Keep low-hanging branches trimmed and leave at least 6 inches of space from ground to tree branch.
Trim Branches Overhanging Your Home
Again, snakes can climb, so if they do find a way to scale your tree, an overhanging branch will provide them with access to the exterior of your home. If a snake becomes trapped in one of the rooms of your house, you might not see it until it strikes.
Hire a professional tree lopper or trimmer to remove branches that are overhanging your roof or are within slithering distance of your windows.
Get Permission To Trim Tree Branches Hanging Over Your Fence
If you live near a park or near bushland, you may have tree branches growing over into your yard. This is risky because if a passing snake senses something that it wants in your yard, such as shade, water or food, it will use the tree to gain access to your yard. If that snake then cannot escape your yard, it may need to risk an encounter with you in order to return to its natural habitat.
In this case, you should contact your local council to get permission to remove branches hanging over your fence. Once you get permission, you will be free to contact a local tree lopper and arrange for the removal of the offending branches.
Summer is on the horizon. Hot snakes will soon be seeking shade in backyards across Australia. Make sure you trim your trees this coming spring to prevent snakes from scaling them in order to reach the cool interior of your home.
